CGSI provides a forum for stakeholders, at all levels, to work together to define and develop a strong and vibrant sensory intelligence industry.

Collaboration

Building effective bridges between industry and academe is a major driving force for CGSI. This will be achieved by promoting and facilitating multi-disciplinary, multi-university and industry-university collaborations.

The vehicles for achieving this include a monthly newsletter, pre-release notification of new research results and licensing opportunities, an annual conference focused on Global Sensing, and focus days in which representatives of a company can meet with researchers at any of the affiliated universities to learn about specific research or to get assistance in solving a particular problem. For an additional annual fee, companies can also send a researcher to an CGSI affiliated university to work with researchers on projects that are of interest to the company. CGSI will also maintain a database of opportunities for student internships, faculty sabbaticals and job opportunities with industrial affiliates.

The speed and effectiveness with which results of sponsored research are transferred to affiliated companies will be an important indicator of the success of CGSI. Strategies for promoting technology transfer include, but are not limited to: introducing researchers to potential industry collaborators or licensees as early as possible in the research process; regularly informing companies of progress and results of research in which they have a particular interest; advising researchers of IP protection requirements and procedures; assisting researchers and industrial affiliates to prepare SBIR and STTR proposals.

Licensing

The Office of Technology Transfer & Economic Development (OTTED) is a service-oriented revenue center organized for the purpose of helping UH faculty, staff, and students identify, protect, and commercialize the University's intellectual property assets so that they can benefit society and spur economic growth for state and national economies. OTTED markets and licenses technologies developed at the University of Hawai’i, seeks to encourage broad utilization of the results of University research, and supports the transfer of new technology and ideas from the University to the community-at-large.
